Differences between Handmade and Machine made Rugs
This Infographic distinguishes between handmade and machine made rugs. It provides a glance on major features of these carpets that make these different from each other.
Knots
Handmade: Manually made carpets possess tighter knots. This is because each knot or tuft is done through labor intensive techniques. The knots are rough but strong nonetheless.
Machine made: Loomed rugs have more number of knots than handmade carpets. The knots have a perfect symmetry. They are fine and not rough. Hence, loomed fabric floorings have smooth surface and edge.
Durability
Handmade: These carpets have a long shelf life. Side stitch of these fabric covers is compact. So, these flooring choices can resist wear and tear for a decent period.
Machine made: Loomed carpets may not last as long as handmade rugs. Most often, the edges are sewn to the carpet’s end, rather than being a part of the rug. So, the carpet may be susceptible to an early wear and tear.
Quality
Handmade: These carpets are of high quality because of manual stitching at the sides and ends. The pile of the carpet is thicker than loomed carpets.
Machine made: Carpets made on looms are of lower quality than handmade fabric coverings. This is because of loose knots, sewn ends and absence of backing.
Cost
Handmade: Manmade rugs are costly because of the long time taken to construct these flooring covers. Labor intensive methods increase the cost of production.
Machine made: Carpets that are loomed are lower in price when compared to handmade rugs. This is because it takes lesser time and cost to produce such fabric covers.
Materials
Handmade: Most of the handmade rugs are produced from natural materials like wool, cotton, jute, sisal, seagrass, silk and bamboo. Handmade rugs are best Eco-friendly floor covers. Sometimes, these fabric covers can also possess synthetic materials.
Machine made: Loomed rugs are generally manufactured from synthetic materials like polyester, viscose and nylon. But, many of these flooring covers are also made from natural materials. Some of these carpets may have a mix of different materials.
